Before the Coffee Gets Cold ☕
For August, we couldn't have picked a more fitting book for Neighbors Book Club: Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi.
Set in a small café in Tokyo, the story follows a collection of people given an extraordinary opportunity—to travel back in time. But there are rules, and one matters more than any other:
They must return before the coffee gets cold.
That premise opened the door to conversations about regret, relationships, loss, second chances, and the things we might say if we had one more opportunity to sit across from someone.
And, of course, gathering around coffee to discuss a book about the power of conversations over coffee felt especially appropriate for us.
As always, Ali guided the discussion with questions created specifically for the book, giving everyone an opportunity to share what resonated with them and hear how others interpreted the same stories.
More Than a Book Club
One of our favorite things about Book Club continues to be what happens beyond the actual discussion.
People stick around. Conversations continue. Someone who arrived not knowing anyone leaves having met a few new people.
That's ultimately what we hoped this would become.
The books give us a reason to gather, but the community is what keeps us coming back.
Things Are Getting a Little Spooky... 👀
October is around the corner, so naturally, we're changing the mood for our next chapter.
Our next Neighbors Book Club selection is Nightmares & Dreamscapes by Stephen King, a collection of short stories that takes us into the strange, unsettling, and sometimes downright bizarre corners of King's imagination.
And with October officially here, we can't think of a better time to read it. 🎃📚
We'll also be gathering outdoors again at Woodley Gardens Pavilion for an afternoon of coffee, conversation, and probably a few stories you won't want to think about too much once the sun goes down.
